Chapter 14: Predicting What Your Future Baby Looks Like

Chen Han scrutinized for a while before asking, “Did he just call you ‘Dad’?”

Shen Jinnian wasn’t sure how to explain.

Then, Chen Han caught on to another detail. “Wait, why did he call your shirt ‘Daddy’?”

Shen Jinnian sighed regretfully. “You already know—his brain isn’t quite normal.”

Otherwise, he wouldn’t have clung to him so persistently.

“That’s true,” Chen Han said, half-believing.

He took another look at the shirt the little baby was treating like a treasure. It was indeed one Shen Jinnian had worn out earlier—just with some random mixed scents clinging to it.

Seeing Shen Jinnian completely unfazed by the situation, Chen Han decided not to ask any further.

Shen Jinnian quickly packed his luggage and skillfully stuffed the child into his backpack. “I already sent a sample for a paternity test. Once the police take the kid, I’ll treat you to a meal.”

Chen Han unconsciously ignored the second half of the sentence. “When will the test results be out?”

“Next Tuesday,” Shen Jinnian answered without thinking.

“Oh, that’s fast.” Chen Han lightly patted his shoulder. “Congrats in advance—you’ll be free soon.”

The little baby in the backpack seemed to understand and cheerfully chimed in, “Fuya! Fuya!”

[T/N: The author uses these terms/baby talk in English even when the rest of the text is in chinese so I’m just following their lead.]

Chen Han was fascinated by the cute little cub and sighed. “If it weren’t for his unknown background, I’d actually like him. He’s so well-behaved and adorable.”

Well-behaved, my ass.

Shen Jinnian wasn’t pleased. “Let’s go.”

Not giving them any more time to bond, he zipped up the backpack, slung it over his front in one fluid motion, and walked straight out of the dormitory without looking back.

The baby was very obedient and hid in the school bag without saying a word, because the schoolbag contained the shirt that his daddy had just brought back, and there were still fresh pheromones on it.

It was one of his favorite smells!

Happily hugging the damp shirt, the baby took cautious, tiny breaths, afraid that, just like last time, the scent would fade away too quickly.

All the way home, Shen Jinnian worried that the baby would start crying and make him look like a kidnapper.

Fortunately, the cub remained quiet. It wasn’t until they arrived home that Shen Jinnian noticed he had fallen asleep while clutching the damp shirt.

Taking advantage of the time, Shen Jinnian ordered dinner.

Just as he completed the payment, a sudden pop-up message startled him.

Pen, Ink, and Paper: Coming tomorrow?

The more Shen Jinnian looked at it, the weirder it felt—like they had some shady deal going on.

Heartbroken Puppy: No sincerity.

The other party was the one who should be making amends, yet somehow, Gu Yan expected him to personally show up and apologize instead.

Pen, Ink, and Paper: Should I come to your place?

Heartbroken Puppy: No need. Just use a same-city courier to pick it up.

This time, Gu Yan didn’t reply right away. After a while, he hesitantly asked, “Do I have to call one every day?”

Shen Jinnian suddenly picked up on the underlying meaning and couldn’t help but sneer while holding his phone. “Gu Yan, are you so broke that you can’t afford a courier?”

No reply.

Seizing the rare opportunity to see Gu Yan at a loss, Shen Jinnian pressed on with his mocking. “You can’t even afford a delivery service? How are you going to get married and raise kids in the future? Omegas are expensive to take care of, you know.”

— Fine, just consider the delivery fee as a debt. Pay it back in instalments.

Gu Yan sent back a "cat puffing up in indignation" emoji, making Shen Jinnian’s scalp tingle with disgust.

Without hesitation, he hurriedly sent his address and closed the chat window.

After dinner, the baby was still asleep.

Shen Jinnian quickly freshened up and carefully lay back down beside the little one.

“PaPa…” The baby seemed to catch his scent even in sleep, mumbling softly before rolling over and hugging his waist. His tiny, rosy face rested on Shen Jinnian’s arm, completely trusting him.

In that moment, Shen Jinnian finally understood what Chen Han meant.

A six-month-old baby—too small to speak, too young to understand anything—yet he poured all his trust and love into him. It was hard not to be moved.

Shen Jinnian stared for a while before instinctively pulling out his phone and snapping a photo of the baby sleeping in his arms.

Even though the child would be sent away next week, he figured he should keep a memento.

The photo was automatically saved to his album, and almost immediately, the system began categorizing similar faces. Shen Jinnian clearly saw the baby’s picture being placed in his selfie folder.

[T/N: Google photos has this feature if you didn’t know.]

Which meant—the system had identified their faces as similar.

His hand froze mid-exit.

Frowning, he carefully examined the two faces side by side. To his surprise, when placed together, there was an uncanny resemblance.

That was… weird.

If he hadn't kept himself clean and hadn't dated an omega in the past 20 years, he would really suspect that he had an illegitimate child.

The more Shen Jinnian thought about it, the more excited he became.

Then, he suddenly recalled Chen Han saying the baby looked like Gu Yan.

He randomly searched for a photo of Gu Yan's ID card on the school's official website and fed it—along with his own—into an AI generator.

"Find out what your future baby would look like!"

As the countdown began, Shen Jinnian suddenly felt guilty, as if he’d been caught red-handed. What if Gu Yan somehow sensed this through his sixth sense? He was using his photo—without permission—to match a baby.

Feeling a little uneasy, he burrowed under the covers and peeked at the results.

The moment his eyes landed on the generated image, his breath hitched.

He looked at the Al picture, then glanced at the baby in his arms, and carefully compared the two faces 360 degrees without dead angles.

This...

It wasn’t identical, but there was absolutely no relation.

He let out a quiet sigh of relief.

Then, realization struck, and he nearly lost it. What the hell was I even worried about?!

How could he possibly have a child? Two Alphas couldn’t have a baby together! And even if they could, there was no way it would be Gu Yan’s.

Shen Jinnian laughed at his own absurd idea for a moment, threw away his phone, crawled back into the quilt, and crept to hug the sleeping baby.

The little cub opened his eyes in a daze, confirmed that the shirt was in his arms, and fell asleep again after he was in Shen Jinnian's arms.

Both of them slept soundly and woke up naturally the next morning.

Shen Jinnian, with a messy hair, stared at the baby with the same messy hair, as if they were in a stalemate over who would make breakfast.

Just as they were still half-awake, struggling to pull themselves together, Shen Jinnian’s phone rang.

It was a local number, and he answered it without thinking.

A polite voice came through: “Hello, Mr. Shen. I’m from Same-City Delivery, and I’m downstairs.”

Shen Jinnian froze.

The more he listened, the more familiar it sounded.

Then, in a flash of realization—

“Gu Yan! Are you insane?!”
