Chapter 35 SJC

Shen Jinnian: …

How was Gu Yan’s behavior any different from a dog’s? Using this to threaten him?

Threatening was one thing, but he even made sure to leave no room for refusal. He’d completely blocked off all of Shen Jinnian’s escape routes.

Left with no choice, Shen Jinnian could only grit his teeth and open the door.

Crossing his arms, Shen Jinnian cautiously asked, “After seeing me and the baby, will you leave?”

Gu Yan didn’t reply—he just looked at him.

Shen Jinnian knew very well that he was being aggressive. But under Gu Yan’s deep gaze, his confidence wavered, and he gave in first.

Gu Yan offered a compromise. “I’ll stay for two hours, then leave.”

“Fine,” Shen Jinnian said, turning toward the dining table.

He glanced out the window without thinking and saw dark clouds pressing low in the sky.

It was the rainy season. Looked like the weather was going to change again.

“But I suggest you come back tomorrow,” Shen Jinnian reminded him.

Gu Yan already knew it would rain today. He assumed Shen Jinnian was worried he’d get drenched on the way home, and for some reason, the stone weighing down his heart felt a bit lighter. “It’s fine.”

“Don’t misunderstand. It’s because we’re about to eat dinner,” Shen Jinnian said, unwrapping the takeout. “There’s none for you.”

“…” He had overestimated Shen Jinnian’s tolerance for him. “I already ate.”

Shen Jinnian let out a quiet humph and mumbled, “Didn’t ask you.”

With that, he slowly began setting out bowls and chopsticks.

Gu Yan sat on the sofa waiting for ten minutes, and Shen Jinnian was just finishing plating the food. His movements were at 0.1x speed—slow like a little sloth.

“…,” Gu Yan realized something was off and quickly asserted his rights. “I’d like to revise my earlier statement. The two hours don’t include your dinner time.”

Shen Jinnian: “…Got it.”

Even that tiny little trick had been seen through by Gu Yan.

Left with no choice, Shen Jinnian hurried through dinner and went to the nursery to switch shifts with the nanny.

Then he called Gu Yan to the study to talk.

When the nanny came out, she ran right into Gu Yan. She paused for a second before beaming with delight.

The look she gave Gu Yan was full of approval. Taking the opportunity while Shen Jinnian wasn’t looking, she whispered to him, “Xiao Shen responds to gentleness, not force. Don’t try to push him.”

Gu Yan smiled and nodded. “Thank you, Auntie.”

The two lingered briefly.

Shen Jinnian, not seeing Gu Yan follow, came out again with the baby in his arms. “Gu Yan, are you coming or not?”

The man immediately followed.

He closed the study door behind Shen Jinnian.

Shen Jinnian flipped the hourglass on the desk. “Two hours. Starting now.”

Gu Yan had no objections.

He sat down on the sofa directly across from Shen Jinnian.

The baby reached out his little arms, wanting Shen Jinnian to sit with Gu Yan. But one glare from Shen Jinnian shut him right up.

The cub curled up in his arms obediently, not daring to move. He held Shen Jinnian’s finger and tried to win favor in a small voice, “PaPa~”

Gu Yan noticed the baby sneaking glances at him. After a moment of hesitation, he carefully said, “About the child… I still want to try.”

Shen Jinnian was about to blow up.

But Gu Yan cut him off and laid it bare. “I know you’re aware deep down—you just don’t want to admit it.”

It was nothing more than struggling to accept that his mortal enemy suddenly had a blood tie with his son.

Maybe it was even harder to accept that two Alphas had ended up together, and now he had to face society’s strange stares because of it…

Shen Jinnian had always been a pampered young master. Naturally, he felt overwhelmed and aggrieved hearing people talk behind his back.

“That’s why I’m not here to force you,” Gu Yan said, taking out a small sample bag. Inside was a lock of his own hair. The other, clearly meant for the baby, was still empty. “I’ll go ahead with the paternity test. Once the results come out, you can decide.”

Shen Jinnian instinctively shifted backward, holding the baby tightly in a protective stance, his arms curled defensively. His eyes flicked uneasily to Gu Yan. “And what if I choose not to?”

Gu Yan didn’t respond. But his expression dimmed, just a little.

Shen Jinnian knew he’d gone too far with his words.

Because of social issues, the government had become stricter about household registration for newborns. For most people, a marriage certificate was essential to register a child.

If the DNA test did prove the child to be Gu Yan’s, and he still refused to marry him or register the baby’s identity, then yes—he’d be in the wrong.

“Can I hold the baby?” Gu Yan changed the subject.

Shen Jinnian hesitated, looked down at the baby in his arms, then finally handed the child over.

As Gu Yan took the baby, there was a glint in his eyes—sharp and fleeting.

Soft over hard.

Even the nanny, who’d only been working for less than a month, had already figured out Shen Jinnian’s temperament. Gu Yan, who had been his classmate for three years, knew it even better.

If he stepped back just a little, Shen Jinnian would retreat by a mile.

Gu Yan had mastered the rhythm. After taking the baby, he didn’t push the conversation further. He gave Shen Jinnian space to think, while he simply sat on the couch and played with the child.

Shen Jinnian sat on the chair, squinting his eyes and staring at the intimate interaction between the two.

The baby was usually wary of strangers. It had taken the nanny an entire day to coax him when she first arrived. But with Gu Yan, it was different. He didn’t have to do anything special—the baby warmed up to him instantly, even leaning toward him on his own.

It said a lot about the child’s biological ties.

Time slipped by.

Aunt Chen, the nanny, knocked hurriedly on the door, her voice slightly panicked. “Mr. Shen, a violent storm just started outside. Cars parked along the road are getting flipped over. What should we do about our guest tonight?”

Shen Jinnian stood up, pulled open the blinds, and looked outside.

Rain hammered down the windows like a waterfall. Through the haze, he could barely make out the trees, their leaves and branches thrashing wildly in the wind.

It really did look dangerous.

“Are the subways still running?” he asked.

“No, the floodwater’s backing up,” the nanny frowned. “The forecast did warn about a heavy storm tonight, but the roads didn’t shut down until half an hour ago.”

Shen Jinnian turned sharply to look at Gu Yan. “You planned this, didn’t you?”

The timing was too perfect.

The storm hit just after Gu Yan arrived. And the worst of it? Due in two hours. No decent person would throw someone out in this weather.

Gu Yan held the baby with one arm and calmly pulled up his ticket info on his phone. “I came straight here after getting off the train. I didn’t check the forecast.”

Shen Jinnian wasn’t fully convinced.

He looked back outside. The wind and rain weren’t easing up—they were getting worse. One thick tree was snapped clean in half, crashing down on the parking lot’s guardrail with a deafening bang.

Shen Jinnian’s heart clenched. With a sigh, he gave in. “Auntie, please get a guest room ready.”

Right after the words left his mouth, something struck him.

“Wait a second. Don’t we only have two bedrooms?”

He had one.

The nanny and baby shared the nursery.

If Gu Yan was staying... then where was he going to sleep?
